Comparing our final music video

When uploading our final music video I found another group from another school that had done the same song as us so our group decided to watch it and talk about what we liked and what we didn't and what they could have done to improve.
This is the video they have made:

I personally do not like the video as I found most of it very cringy and cliché. Especially the bit at the end where she kisses another guy and then sticks her finger up at the camera. They have used lots of different shots which is good but a lot of them are repeated so therefore the storyline becomes unclear for the audience to view.

Magazine Inspiration

These are the magazines we have got inspiration from for when we create our own magazine for our new and upcoming star. We liked how professional they are and how much details they are all in about the artist. I noticed that the first thing you see is a big picture of the artist. So we need to do this for our artist.

Why did they get the marks they got in their music video?

Disco Lights 16/60:

I think the music video 'Disco Lights' got very poor marks because the video itself was very basic and this let it down. I thought the night club and drinking idea was good and appropriate for the song but they could have made everything bigger and more complicated by adding different things in the scenes instead of people drinking. Also the effects they have added in are alright to make it look more creative but the way this group have edited it in they have made it look quite amateurish because you can tell it is not a natural shot.

To improve it more the boys could have used more background scenery and gone to different places apart from just drinking in the house. Also when they film in the night club they should have started filming that once the bass of the song had dropped.

You've got the love 22/60:

I think this music video got the marks it did because it was very boring and dull to watch. All the shots were pretty much the same and the singers had no emotions. Also the lip syncing is really out of time and it does not look professional at all, they need to have made it so it looks a lot more in time. I did not like the version of the song they have chosen the whole video made me feel bored and wanted to turn it off.

To improve it the singers needed to display emotion when they were lip syncing. The effects they used made it look really amateurish too, they could have made it much more original.

Youth 32/60:

What I like about 'Youth' is that they have used many different angle shots and focus shot. The video was filled with emotion and all the shots were clear. The thing I think that let them down was that the storyline was a bit confusing and this made the audience get confused so it would let them down. Also we kept getting shown the same shot of the tap and this got boring. The people making the music video did not listen to the song as it was becoming my dramatic and upbeat and the pace of the clip was just staying the same and most of the time dropping.

The thing this group could improve on was that is the main 'Star' singing the lyrics could show a bit more facial expressions to help the audience understand what is going on and also if they improved the storyline this would also help.
They also need to improve on showing a variety of shots and when the slap happens they needed to have made it look alto more realistic.

Do my thing 60/60:

I think 'Do my thing' got full marks in their production because they have lots of quick snappy accurate shots that are really good quality and make the video look really effective. The main singer displays lots of emotion and she stays in character throughout the song the whole time. The whole video is very colourful and all of the shots are done well, this is where there video stands out from the rest.

The video looks really professional throughout and with the dancing it also makes it look really realistic. I like the scenes where there are three or four things going on at the same time and this helps it to look better by exaggerating the quick shots too. The many costumes changes and makeup looks really good to help add the colour to the whole music video.

This music video inspired me to make lots of little shots and make my own one look as professional as possible.

Effy Make-up Inspiration

This is an inspiration video that we found to help us by giving us a step-by-step guide to do it perfectly, we used this to follow when we were getting ready to shoot this is what we are hoping all the girls makeup will look like when it has been done.

My 3 track choices

I have personally chosen three songs that I liked and thought could be an option of our music video. It will also depend what groups we get put it to what personalities people have and if they like the song.

1. Beautiful Disaster by Kelly Clarkson

I have chosen this song as one of my three choices that we could use as a music video as it is very emotional and it is about love which would draw peoples attention in and make them want to watch it. The thing that I am not sure about this video is that it might be too slow and the love theme might get cringy because everyone uses this theme.

2. Who's Loving You by The Jackson 5

I have always loved this song and I know how much emotion is put into it so I thought this would be a fun challenge to do. The problem is I will not have a group of 5 boys so this would be another challenge in itself because we would have to rely on other people which we would not want to do. Also the music video you chose for this song would need to be done in a clever way to make it unique.

3. Lily Allen- Somewhere only we know

This is a meaningful song that could be used for quite a lot of genres, I like the slow songs as I think a music video will display emotions like these well and therefore they would be good to do. I know it would be a challenge but I think every song needs to have a slow bit to make the audience relate to the video even more.

Textual analysis of a music video of your choice

Where Is The Love by The Black Eyed Peas

I have chosen this video to analyse as the music video is very different from any other normal one. This video is about terrorism and vandalism and how to stop it. The video is showing people wrecking the world and young children becoming affected by it.
I like the close up shots of the children's faces as it helps the audience to relate to them and the song itself makes people think what is happening to the love in the world. The conventions in this music video are known because the song is talking about people's lives and how they live and the music video represents this because it is showing how horrible the lives they live are and the singers are trying to get people to stop. The miming on the music video is spot on and a lot of emotion is shown on the artists face's, this is also to come across to the audience how important the message is that they are trying to get across.
The video also shows that institutions like the BBC changed people and the media changes people for the worse and this video helps makes people think about this.

Representation and in depth analysis

We were given a representation task in class to analyse music videos and find music that shows different representations of things for example the male and female gaze.

Voyeurism Freud - erotic pleasure can be gained by looking at a sexual object
(preferably when the object is unaware of being watched).
 find an example of voyeurism.

Exhibitionism - Female performers being at once sexually provocative and apparently in control of and inviting a sexualised gaze in what could be termed as the opposite of voyeurism.

The song 'Can't remember to forget you' by Shakira and Rhianna is a representation of the male gaze because of the music video. The video helps to attract the male audience especially by the way the artists are dressed and act for example grinding on the wall.

'Wiggle' by Jason Derulo is an example of the female gaze. This is because of the music video and the fact that Jason is topless for the majority of the video, this encourages girls to watch it.

Miley Cyrus is an example of a strong, powerful female because she gets a lot of stick from the press and her fans. Whatever she does no one seems to be satisfied, so she tries hard to keep everyone happy, including herself.

Star Profile

Star Profile- Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera's image has changed over time because as you can see in all her music videos, her hair is a different colour and style. Some of her videos she is fully clothed and others she is pretty much naked.
Christina was born on December 18th 1980 and is an American singer and actress. Aguilera has been through a lot as her parents divorced when she was just six years old. The song 'Hurt' came about because it shows losing a loved one. Later on in her career she found out that someone was stealing money from her who she thought was her friend.

The song 'Dirrty' was about "In the power position, in complete command of everything around me"
'Genie in a bottle' used sexual preferences to represent the theme of self-respect.

 More about Christina:
Aguilera earned her second number-one record in the United States with her fifth studio album, Back to Basics in 2006. Two of its singles, "Ain't No Other Man" and "Hurt", charted in the upper registers of record charts worldwide. In 2010, Aguilera released her electronic-inspired sixth studio album, Bionic, although it made little success. Later that year, Aguilera starred alongside Cher in the film Burlesque. In 2011, Aguilera became an original coach on the U.S. television series The Voice, and has since appeared on four of its six seasons. That year, she earned her fifth number-one single in the United States with her Maroon 5 collaboration "Moves like Jagger". Aguilera returned to the pop sound of her debut record with her seventh studio album, Lotus in 2012, although it became the lowest-selling album of her career. She experienced commercial success as the featured vocalist on the US top-ten singles "Feel This Moment" and "Say Something" in 2013.

Your body was released on September 16th 2012.

Candyman was released on February 20th 2007.

Beautiful was released on November 16th 2002.

The Voice Within was released on October 27th 2003.

This song is associated with losing a loved one. You can see the emotion that Christina is trying to portray to the audience about how much she loved that person.

Bound To You was released in 2010.

Ain't No Other Man was released on June 6th 2006.

The song  Moulin Rouge was made especially for the film and its accompanying soundtrack.
Christina is joined by Pink, Kim, Mya and Lady Marmalade to sing the song. By doing this is helped advertise the film alot.

"In the power position, in complete command of everything around me"

AUDIENCE-why and how do you consume music?

How do you consume music?
When? do you have a daily music routine?

Is some music more suitable at a certain time of day than another?

My daily routine of consuming music begins every morning when I listen to my radio as it helps me to wake up. Then when I walk to school I put my headphones in and listen to my music. During the day if I have a singing lesson I will sing and listen to a variety of songs then. Sometimes in lessons my teacher will play a song related to the work to set us a task or my friend will show me a good song that they like that's new in the charts. Later on in the day I go to dance, and mum drives me in the car, she will play one of her Cd's or she will play the radio in the car. Then at dance I do modern, tap and ballet, and a wide variety of music is played to from slow instrumental tunes, to Lady Gaga's 'Just Dance'.

Music gives me pleasure because whatever mood I'm in there are songs to match my feelings. For example some help me to get ready in the morning and put me in a good mood and some I love to sing along to especially when I'm feeling sad. I am not good with wording things or telling people how I feel so I prefer to show it through music.

USES AND GRATIFICATIONS THEORY

Information - sometimes you learn something from a song?
I learnt from this song that sometimes you just have to let things go instead of clinging onto things that aren't worth it. You are stronger than you think and this song taught me that.

Entertainment - I enjoy singing along to Beyonce and watching and her dance moves as she has a lot of energy and enthusiasm so therefore that comes across to the audience so it keeps me entertained.

Personal Identification - When someone would hurt my feelings or break my heart I would listen to a sad song to help express my mood and then it would make myself feel better. Also I would listen to a song to make me stronger so therefore I can power through. This is why I can relate to the song 'Listen' by Beyonce.

Social Interaction - Songs me and my friends dance to when we all go to a party for example 'Its My Birthday' by Will.I.am ft Cody Wise. I think this song is good for social interaction as it is very upbeat and is a good song to dance too.

What music means to me

1. My childhood song

Because you loved me by Celine Dion was my childhood song that meant a lot to me because it reminds my mum of her dad (my grandad) who died of Cancer. It also was my mum and dads wedding song.
Me and my sister also won many talents shows with this song as I sang and she signed because she is profoundly deaf.

2. My early teenage song

This song insprires me to do something that I love and as a teenager it was to sing everywhere I go. The lyrics make me realise how much I love to sing and I am lucky to have an opportunity like I do.

3. A song that means a lot to me now

Hurt by Christina Aguilera is a song that means a lot to me because I lost someone very special to me. It also reminds me of the saying 'You never know what you have until its gone'.

Banana Phone Editing Task

Our teacher gave us a list of shots to capture, to create a music video for the song "Banana Phone". This was to help improve our editing skills on Adobe Premier Pro.

In conclusion to this activity, I have further developed my editing skills with  Premiere. By creating a video to accompany the song has also improved my ability to follow the beat of a track and how the lip pattern of the artist has to be in the correct time with the song. Also, it has expanded my creative vision and organisation within a team - we took a creative approach and made the most of a one hour shooting session, espeically when filming in a wheelchair. I am particularly pleased with how I managed to complete the 'cloning' effect. Although I had created some fairly complex effects before, such as advanced animated titles, this was not something that I had experimented with so therefore this made it more fun.

No Rest by Dry The River

This lesson we got set a visualisation task to listen to the song 'No Rest' whilst imagining what would be happening in a music video without actually being shown the real music video.

This was the real music video:

1. What images are conjuring up in your mind when you hear the song?
I came up with ideas of a man walking through a maze with thornes sticking out of it and then it contrasts to scenes of the band singing. Then throughout the music video these two scenes keep changing to show the journey of love that he went through.

2. What kind of video/ visuals/ effects? Consider performance/ narrative/ concept?
The visuals show facial expressions of the man that has had his heart broken and then it shows facial expressions of the band playing the actual song live. Effects that are used is making everywhere look dark adn gloomy to show that he is heartbroken.

3. What are the emotions it stirs in you?
The emotion that came to my head was that he was sad and depressed because he has had his heart broken. He is expressing how much he loved the person he lost.

What ideas did the other people in the class come up with?

-A wedding was happening then it goes to a reverse time line of photos of the couple single (before they met) then it would reverse even more and it would lead to divorce infidelity.
-An old peasant in ancient Rome, searching for gold, whilst the roman soldiers were chased by guards all for love.
-A singer walking away from the camera along a road in Spain village, then it changes to the beach and it shows flashbacks of the past relationships.
-An urban London theme of a man walking on the pavement with everything blurry in the background and his wife is walking past him fast with another man.
-A mans body parts falling off his body throughout the song then his body is slowly falling away until it ends up as a pile of ash.
-A close up shot of a man with a sky behind the camera revolving then the band playing in the air slow motion, a woman goes past and tries to grab her.

Music Video Theory

Today we learnt about Andrew Goodwin's music video theory.
We were told to look at the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals,
(Whether the visuals illustrate, amplify or contradict music)
We were also told to look at the relationship between the music and the visuals.
Is it a particular music genre with their own music video style/iconography?
Another important thing to look at was close up shots of the main artist/vocalist.

Steve Archer said consider these main elements:
-Lyrics                  -Camera
-Music                  -Editing
-Genre                  -Intertexuality
-Performance       -Narrative

Here are 3 examples of music videos that contrast:

This music video of the song 'Hideaway' by Kiesza is showing her dancing whilst she is singing about someone hiding away with her more. Even though she is singing about someone she is not showing her expression through her face, she is showing it through dance, this is very different to Adeles music video as Adele is relying purely on her body language and facial expressions. Even though she is expressing her feelings through movements the movements she is doing match the beat of the song so therefore it looks more effective. Kiesza only has a close up shots of her face on the screen but mainly long shots are used to show her dancing and all her backing dancers.

In contrast to Hideaway, Adele's 'Someone Like You'  has a very different music video showing a lot of emotional facial expressions. This helps her to connect with the audience and help deliver the lyrics to the audience and show what the song is all about, which is heartbreak. Adele uses similar facial expressions and signs to the lyrics she is singing to display that she is sad, she does not rely on dancers or anyone. Also the colour background of the video helps represent the mood she is trying to get across to the audience.

The song 'Madworld' by Gary Jules has a very different music video in contrast to the other two, as it is showing expressions through people creating shapes and things moving instead of seeing one individual person and relying on the them to tell the audience the story. The song is based of children at school, the lyrics contrast to the music video a bit as they do not show any particular emotion but the pace of the video fits the song perfectly as they are both very slow and gentle. Every so often you get a glimpse of a man on a balcony watching the people but you do not get to see the facial expressions on their face.
