A2 Music Video Final

Music Video Theory

Today we learnt about Andrew Goodwin's music video theory.
We were told to look at the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals,
(Whether the visuals illustrate, amplify or contradict music)
We were also told to look at the relationship between the music and the visuals.
Is it a particular music genre with their own music video style/iconography?
Another important thing to look at was close up shots of the main artist/vocalist.

Steve Archer said consider these main elements:
-Lyrics                  -Camera
-Music                  -Editing
-Genre                  -Intertexuality
-Performance       -Narrative

Here are 3 examples of music videos that contrast:

This music video of the song 'Hideaway' by Kiesza is showing her dancing whilst she is singing about someone hiding away with her more. Even though she is singing about someone she is not showing her expression through her face, she is showing it through dance, this is very different to Adeles music video as Adele is relying purely on her body language and facial expressions. Even though she is expressing her feelings through movements the movements she is doing match the beat of the song so therefore it looks more effective. Kiesza only has a close up shots of her face on the screen but mainly long shots are used to show her dancing and all her backing dancers.

In contrast to Hideaway, Adele's 'Someone Like You'  has a very different music video showing a lot of emotional facial expressions. This helps her to connect with the audience and help deliver the lyrics to the audience and show what the song is all about, which is heartbreak. Adele uses similar facial expressions and signs to the lyrics she is singing to display that she is sad, she does not rely on dancers or anyone. Also the colour background of the video helps represent the mood she is trying to get across to the audience.

The song 'Madworld' by Gary Jules has a very different music video in contrast to the other two, as it is showing expressions through people creating shapes and things moving instead of seeing one individual person and relying on the them to tell the audience the story. The song is based of children at school, the lyrics contrast to the music video a bit as they do not show any particular emotion but the pace of the video fits the song perfectly as they are both very slow and gentle. Every so often you get a glimpse of a man on a balcony watching the people but you do not get to see the facial expressions on their face.
