A2 Music Video Final

Music video prelim task evaluation

Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?
I worked with Ben Smith and James Clifford, we managed the task well between us because we all had different, equal roles. For example I created the props list and got all the costumes ready, Ben did a story board and got the lyrics up and filmed the clip and James directed it and prepared what shot we had to film next etc.

How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?
To plan our sequence we used a storyboard to work out all the scenes like the timing, what angle we need to be at and where about we have to angle the shot next. This helped us to be more accurate with things and help us to realise how much time we actually have.

What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it?
To film the music video we used Sony HandyCams and a tripod, we took a shot for each individual scene and then we wrote down for the shot in advance what angle it is going to be for example long shot or medium shot etc. We shot in random orders depending on the facilities and lighting available at the time, by doing this we avoided wasting time.

What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?
When planning, shooting and editing we had to take into account a few things, for example the availability of the classroom for different shots, when we needed the corridor we had to time filming with the rest of the school walking through. Other things we had to consider was that the lighting was accurate and the costumes of the character on the set; big or little Jessie J. Another thing was had to consider was that the person being filmed knew there lyrics well enough and the timing of them so they could be filmed and when the editing was done it would be better timing. We had to re-shoot some scenes after editing it on Adobe Premier as some looked unprofessional and out of time, so we did it again to improve them so we learnt from this for next time.

How successful was your music video copy? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently? What did others say about your production?
Overall I think our music video was fairly successful as we tried to get it as accurate as possible but I have learnt next time to be more enthusiastic and out going on camera so it looks better and less robotic. Also I would do a better song that was more appropriate for the group we had, as we had 2 boys and 1 girl.

What have you learnt from completing this task? Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing your music video, do you think?
When creating my music video I have learnt that I want to make it original and creative and different from any other. I found it very difficult to copy someone's else's video so I want make mine easier by creating something that you can not really copy. I have learnt to be more organised for example with how much time we have and how much time is needed. Another thing to be organised about is what the people are going to wear.

How does it compare with filming an opening to a film?
I personally found it a lot harder to make a music video rather than an opening of a film because you had to copy something that had been done professionally so it didn't compare and wouldn't look as good. Also with a film opening you can be original and use your own costumes and make up your own characters so this is different. Another thing to consider is when we make our real music video we will have to chose a song and create something totally different that no one else has done at the same time to some lyrics that are appropriate. This year is going to be much more of a challenge.

What are your strengths and weaknesses as a group member?
My strengths are that I put a lot of effort into how it will look for example, costumes, making it as similar as possible. My weaknesses are that I cant really dance or do anything that will stand out and help with a music video, I am looking forward to doing the real thing so I can create an original video without having to compare to anything.

Looking at the other group's videos which do you think were most successful and why?
I think a three groups did really well they were, 'What time is it' by Emma B, Charlie-ann, Richard and Sam. 'That's what I go to school for' by Dom, Megan and Ben F  and 'And all these little things' by Nick, Max, Sam, Ben and Fred. These stood out to me because they are very accurate to the real video and all the miming is accurate in the clips too so this adds to the effect.
